Marist Maths Week 2024
A wide range of fun filled events, promoting mathematical thinking inside and outside the classroom, were organised for Marist students during Maths Week 2024.
Well done to all First Years who took part in the Maths Poster Competition. This year’s winner was Mohid Sohail, in Second place Hamza Tariq and in Third place Sean McGuire. A Special Merit Award was given to Leo Kilduff, Zach Buckley and Robert O’Dowd for their fantastic artwork.
Second Year Students were invited to take part in a Maths Week activity in Our Lady’s Bower. The Bower Maths department organised a Maths Eyes investigation followed by a Maths based team quiz. Maths Eyes challenges the students to see the Maths that surrounds them whilst in school, at home, and in all real-world settings.
Each day new Junior and Senior problem were displayed in the central area and all students were encouraged to submit answers to be in with a chance of winning a prize.
Our Second Year, Transition Year and Fifth Year students participated in the Maggie Gough competition which is organised by the Irish Mathematics Teachers Association. It is an online multiple-choice quiz in honour of the first known Irish woman to receive a PhD in Mathematics, Maggie Gough.
A Maths Week Table Quiz was organised for Fifth year students. The winning team was made up of Daniel Stankard, Volodymyr Karlushyn, Jack Lennon and Callum Hudson.
Throughout the week, the Maths teachers displayed mathematical “Dingbats” for their students during class time. Dingbats are visual word puzzles from which a well-known phrase or word has to be identified. The students participated actively during the class whilst engaging in mathematical terminology.
Thank you to the Maths Department for organising the various activities and games for students and to other departments in the school for incorporating Maths into their lessons to promote the subject. Well done to all prize winners!
