Junior Cycle

Structure and Curriculum

The Junior Cycle programme is underpinned by a framework introduced in 2015, which emphasises flexibility, creativity, and student-centred learning. The curriculum is structured around a combination of core and optional subjects, ensuring a comprehensive educational experience.

Core Subjects:

  • English
  • Mathematics
  • Irish (compulsory for most students, except in certain exemptions)
  • Science
  • History
  • Geography
  • Business

Optional Subjects:
Students may choose additional subjects, such as Modern Foreign Languages (e.g., French or German) or Technology-based subjects like Woodwork or Technology.

Key Features

  1. Short Courses: In addition to traditional subjects, students can undertake short courses lasting 100 hours, such as Coding, Digital Media Literacy, or Civic, Social, and Political Education (CSPE).

  2. Assessment: The Junior Cycle employs a dual approach to assessment:

    • Classroom-Based Assessments (CBAs): Conducted during the school year, these assess practical and project-based learning.
    • Final Examination: Standardised exams are held at the end of the third year, contributing to the Junior Cycle Profile of Achievement (JCPA).
  3. Key Skills Development: The curriculum incorporates key skills, such as communication, managing information, and working with others, to encourage holistic development.

  4. Wellbeing: Introduced as a formal area of learning, Wellbeing promotes physical, mental, and emotional health through subjects like Physical Education, Social, Personal and Health Education (SPHE), and guidance counselling.

Junior Cycle Profile of Achievement (JCPA)

Upon completion of the Junior Cycle, students receive the JCPA, which summarises their achievements in final examinations, CBAs, and other areas such as extracurricular activities.

Purpose and Progression

The Junior Cycle aims to nurture students’ academic abilities, personal growth, and social responsibility. It lays a strong foundation for the Senior Cycle, including the Leaving Certificate, or alternative pathways like apprenticeships and vocational programmes.
