Marist Seniors Progress to the Quarters

The senior football side backed up a handsome away win against Athy in Round 1 to shock a fancied St. Peter’s of Wexford in the second round game, again in Athy. Despite finding themselves 0-07 tom 0-02 down in the first half, the Marist spirit shone through and they battled back to gain the ascendancy to trail 0-08 to 1-03 at half-time. A Daniel Reid break up the centre was key in the move that saw Marist win a penalty that Michael McGloin took well. A well-taken Ryan Gaffey goal helped the Marist to a two point lead as the game came to a close, but two late Peters’ points saw the game all tied at 2-07 to 0-12 and suggested extra-time was on its way. Up stepped Brian Derwin with a huge side-line ball from 35 yards out on the left to secure a deserved victory at the death. It was just rewards for a hard-working display and some free-flowing football. Marist are the last local side standing in the Leinster ‘A’ Championship, and the management team of Mr. Jordan, Mr.Parker and Mr. Wilson await the quarter-final draw with interest.
