MARIST WEEK 2018

Marist Week 2018 was celebrated recently in Marist College in conjunction with the other Marist schools in Ireland, Moyle Park and Marian College in Dublin. Named in honour of our founder, St. Marcellin Champagnat, our annual Champagnat Mass was celebrated by Fr. Liam Kelly OFM in St. Mary’s Church on Monday, 8th October. The whole school community gathered along with the Athlone and Dublin Marist brothers. We were especially privileged to welcome the family of the late Maureen Dooley, our friend, colleague and teacher, who was taken from us so tragically last March. We also remembered Brother Thomas Mulhern, who also passed away earlier this year. Readings and prayers of the faithful were read by students from all year groups, and the musicians enhanced the ceremony greatly. During the opening procession, students presented a photo of Maureen, the Marist heart, a football and a textbook. We thank Fr. Liam, who took time out from his studies in England to celebrate the Mass.

On Tuesday, Rebecca Bromhead facilitated very interesting workshops for each year group about a Marist-led project in South Africa. The project, called Three2six, aims to help educate refugee children in South Africa who otherwise have no access to primary education. She explained the various volunteering opportunities open to Marist students.

On Wednesday, Mr. Lenihan accompanied his students to a History Quiz involving the other two Marist schools in Dublin. Each school sent four teams. Questions relating to our founder Marcellin Champagnat and the early Marist Brothers in France featured in one round. The four Athlone teams took top honours, and won First, Second, Third and Fourth prizes!

Thanks to everyone involved in celebrating Marist Week.
