AIT was a hive of activity on Wednesday last for the annual SciFest exhibition and competitions. With 16 different team entries and over 45 students, Marist had a very strong representation. This highlights the interest and work being done in the whole area of STEM within the school. We were fortunate to be amongst the prize-winners in various categories. 2nd year student Darragh Elliott won the Boston Scientific sponsored, Junior Individual Life Science Award for his entry ‘
Congratulations to our Junior Cert team of Kieran Egan, Callum McKnight, Conor Gillen and Cian McCarthy who won the Midland Region of the Irish Maths Teachers Association Pi Quiz. With 14 teams from schools across the Midlands and Connacht, Marist continued their remarkable success in this competition, winning it for the 5th consecutive year. The team will now progress to the national finals to be held in May.
Well done to our 1st year Maths students Ben Donegan, Terry Chen, Marco Gaetani, Conor Gill and Jack Keaveney who have qualified for the final of Irish Junior Maths Competition. It is a great achievement to have 5 students make the final and we wish them all the best in the final on Friday next the 27th in the Tullamore Court Hotel. Well done also to their teachers Mr Kelly and Ms McNicholas who have been helping them with their preparations.
Well done to our senior gaelic squad who emerged victorious from the 16 team DCU 7 aside competition last week. On a rare sunny day the Marist lads overcame Colaiste Eoin in the final. This rounds off a successful year for the senior gaelic squad, despite falling just short in the Leinster Final they gave brought us on a great journey this year.
Our TY's 7s team qualified for the Provincial 7s competition in early May in association with the IRFU. The top four from this competition will qualify for the All Ireland 7's. Congratulations to Robbie Henshaw with regard to his Civic recognition by Westmeath County Council last Wednesday evening. Arriving to school at the unusual hour of 2:00 am, 40 TY students and 4 teachers sleepily made their way to Dublin Airport to begin their trip to Barcelona. It was an action filled 5 days with the group getting to visit many famous sites such as the Camp Nou stadium, home of Barcelona FC and the Catulna F1 race track. A team of students from the Marist College in Athlone have been crowned this year’s winner of the CanSat midlands regional finals.
