Irish team claim top prize in Euro space competition
The future for Irish space exploration is safe, considering the remarkable achievement of four secondary school students from Athlone, Co Westmeath. They have taken top prize at the European Space Agency (ESA) CanSat international competition after constructing a tiny satellite the size of a fizzy drink can. Boldly going where no group of Irish students has gone before, Paul McGrath, Pádraig McDermott, Usman Riaz, and Sebastian Klosowski beat stiff competition from 17 other c

Ireland win the 2018 European CanSat Finals in the Azores
A weekend of strong competition in the European CanSat Finals ended with the Irish team, Marist College Athlone, emerging victorious. The finals were held at the Regional Fund for Science and Technology (FRCT) on the island of Santa Maria, Azores. The Marist College team secured their place in the European finals on winning the national finals earlier this year. Irish CanSat for detecting Earth-like planets named European winner
A team of very bright Irish secondary school students has won the top prize at the ESA CanSat international competition with a very clever, tiny satellite. Sending objects into space has never been easier, with SpaceX aiming to have weekly cargo launches on its reusable Falcon 9 rocket quite soon. However, spacefaring technologies are not just limited to multibillion-dollar companies. Last week, the European Space Agency (ESA) held its continental CanSat competition to see wh

European glory for Marist College students in satellite contest
Four students from the Marist College in Athlone have become European champions in the Azores islands, 900 miles off the coast of Portugal. The memorable success came when they defeated teams from 17 other countries to win the European CanSat competition last weekend. This is a prestigious physics contest which challenges students to create a satellite in the volume and shape of a soft drink can. Their CanSat must then be launched, carry out a scientific experiment, and achie

Athlone students win European satellite competition
A team of students from Athlone have won a Europe wide competition to design and fly a miniature drinks-can sized satellite. The teenagers from Marist College won the overall award at the European CanSat Finals in the Azores at the weekend - the first time an Irish team has taken the top spot. The students have to design and build the satellite, which must be capable of carrying out a number of functions after it is deployed from a rocket at altitude and floats back to Earth
