Marist College F1 Team through to Abu Dhabi Finals

On the 5th of April Vintius racing, an ‘F1 in Schools’ team representing the Marist achieved second place in their national finals and have qualified to go to Abu Dhabi for the F1 in Schools World Finals next November.

F1 in Schools is an international STEM challenge in which teams of students aged 9 to 19 deploy CAD 3D modelling software to design miniature cars. The cars are then analysed, manufactured and rigorously tested to design the world’s fastest F1 in Schools car. Teams must also raise sponsorship money from large companies and manage budgets to fund their research, travel and accommodation. The challenge inspires students to use IT to learn about physics, aerodynamics, design, manufacturing, branding, graphic design, sponsorship, marketing, leadership/teamwork, media skills and financial strategy, and apply them in a practical, imaginative, competitive and exciting way.

The Marist has always done well in this competition and successfully made their way to the World Finals on two separate occasions. In 2016, Hurricane Racing went to Austin, Texas and in 2017 Quantum Racing had the opportunity to travel to Malaysia. Both groups of students impressively achieved a well-deserved place on the top 15 teams of the year.

Vintius Racing is made up of six Transition Year students: Conor McNamara (Team manager), Eoghan Carroll (Design engineer), Alexander Farrell (Manufacturing engineer), Michael Munnelly (Graphic designer), Callum McKnight (Marketing manager) and Brian O’ Hara Duggan (Project manager). Our unique team name comes from the Celtic God of wind which reflects both our Irish heritage and summarises our goal to make a car that is both fast and powerful. Our car was the second fastest at the national finals. We also designed an intricate ‘pit’ display, a sponsorship proposal to acquire sponsors, a website and a marketing document that led to us winning the best Marketing and Sponsorship award at the national finals. We look forward to the next stage, the World Finals in Abu Dhabi.
