First and Second Year students recently took part in a retreat, hosted by An Tobar Nua. Through the use of video, music, games, guided reflections and personal stories, the team helped the students to explore their faith. As part of their leadership development programme, they recently visited The Outward Bound Trust at Loch Eli, near Fort William in Scotland. Continuing our long and successful tradition in the IMTA (Irish Maths Teachers Association) annual Maths quiz we had 2 superb performances from our Leaving Certs teams. In a rare twist the 2 Marist teams finished joint second, both just pipped by a team representing Patrician Newbridge. Since the competition began Marist have never failed to be outside the top two! Thanks to Mr Kelly and Ms Dooley who put much work into preparing the teams.
Congratulations to our U-15 team who have reached the West Leinster League Final following their hard fought 1-0 win over Moate CS. Played on the all-weather pitch in the excellent Athlone IT facilities it took a great effort from Brian Nestor to break the deadlock. The focus has now turned to the 1st and 2nd year basketball teams, with both of them enjoying recent success. On Friday last our First Year team had a thrilling one point victory over Scoil Dara Kilcock, having been 10 points down the boys rallied to emerge victorious on a 22-21 scoreline. The English department are currently running a debating competition for 1st and 2nd year students every Wednesday and Thursday. Adjudicators are a mix of 5th year students and teachers. So far we have thrashed out two motions, “This house would intern suspected terrorists”, and “This house believes that social media has done more harm than good”. Marist Top of the League for Boys Going to University! The recent Sunday Independ Schools League Tables showed that over a 9 year period Marist College sent the highest number of boys to university, from secondary schools across Westmeath. This is true of both all-boys schools and mixed schools. Nearly 50% of our students who go to 3rd level attend at one of the universities.
